Due to the restrictions announced by the NSW State Government on June 24, the National Winter Academy has been postponed from the Winter to the Spring holidays.

The Young Mannheim Symphonists 2021 National Winter Academy is a residential camp in Sydney where successful applicants have the opportunity to board for five nights, and spend their days and evenings participating in workshops, tutorials and orchestral rehearsals. The National Winter Academy culminates in a public concert in which the Young Mannheim Symphonists perform the repertoire they have prepared throughout the week.

In 2021, the orchestra will be conducted by Guest Conductor Mario Dobernig and will plunge into masterpieces by the Viennese masters. The students will be mentored by tutors some of whom will rehearse and perform alongside them in the orchestra. The Young Mannheim Symphonists tutors are principal musicians of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra – professional musicians who specialise in historically informed performance on period instruments. Their knowledge of musical styles, articulations, and embellishments comes from years of experience performing; reading treatises and studying scores; experimenting with instruments and interpretations; and sharing with their peers and their students. They are passionate about understanding our musical heritage in the context in which it was created, and they are even more passionate about inspiring and enlightening others.

This program was outstanding as it challenged my current understanding of Classical and Romantic music.

[Young Mannheim Symphonists has] inspired me to the point at which I now want to follow and explore HIP in my university courses and hopefully in my career. The experience of the whole rehearsal process in high-level orchestras and the extra detail involved in historically informed performance was invaluable to me.
